Went for a Sunday drive this past weekend through Haldimand county. From Hamilton the hubby & I began our excursion by making our way through Caledonia. We stopped for a bit to grab some pizza for lunch and check out some Antiques at the Haldimand House by the historic Caledonia Bridge. I was very glad to find a beautiful ornate mirror which I had been on the hunt for to replace the very blah one I’d been using in my bedroom for years. I made a note of definitely wanting to return here when the light & weather is a bit nicer to get some shots of the bridge and town.

From here we pressed on through the countryside with the lake as our destination, admiring the houses along the way. We stopped by a seasonal variety store in a little lakeside cottage town called Peacock Point and found our way down to the water. The sun was beaming down and despite the fact that we were on an icy lake in February, it was really warm and lovely. To our west was a clear yet sorta eerie view of the Nanticoke Power Plant. I couldn’t help but feel a little bit uneasy and nervous to breathe deeply being so close to it. After a while we said bye to the lake, hopped back in the van and made our way home :)

Much fun was had laughing with these lovely ladies as we embraced the crimper to help emphasize their vibrantly coloured locks. I remember that I could have sworn the steam that emitted from Agata’s purple tresses while crimping smelled like grape kool-aid… was probably her shampoo, but it just looks like that how it should smell right?

So seeing as this blog is still fairly new and still I have a bunch of images that I created within this past year that I would like to share i’m going put forth my best efforts to get them up here for your viewing pleasures! The first one i’m going start with is a shoot I did back in November of 2008, “Temptation”.

“Temptation” evolved first from a feeling of a yearning and then transformed into a vision. (Most of my artistic & personal projects tend to begin this way). The vision was of an other-worldy woman who had the power to hold your desires in her hand. As far as details about the woman… or the temptation(s) - I prefer to leave that up the viewer’s interpretation ;)

This is still one of my favourite shoots (I always love shooting outside) and yes the floating apples in the photos are “real” (they weren’t added later in post). To see how it was done check out the making-of vid below!

So out of craving for an art project I decided to do some pumpkin carving this year. I scoured the internet for some fun pumpkin templates and it ended up being a toss up between the monster Carol from “Where the Wild Things Are”, a Super Mario “Boo”, and portrait of Mr. Spock. The boo seemed a bit too easy, and i’m not really a Star Trek fan so i opted for the Wild Things. As I was transferring the image onto the pumpkin though only then did I realize what I was getting myself into (to transfer you take the image printed on a piece of paper placed on the pumpkin and puncture around the image with a thumbtack). Yes. I was not about to give up though! Soooo, over the course of 3 evenings (a couple hours the first and about an hour or so each for the others) I finally finished it up just in time for Halloween :)

Handed out candy for my first time this year (OK, what’s with the kids trick-or-treating without costumes? Seriously.) Then headed over the Casbah Lounge for some metal - Crux of Aux and Skull (my husband Mike plays in Crux). Fun times!

To other fellow photographers and those who aspire to be one, I would like to spread word on something very cool: Trade Secret Cards! These beautiful glossy cards have a different image on each card, and on the back contain a lighting diagram and explanation on how the image was shot. A cool way to learn some new techniques with the bonus of being small enough to fit in your camera bag :) Scope out their website for more info and how to order the set.

I’m also very pleased to say that my photo “Letting Go” has been included in their debut set “Strobist Favorites Gallery Vol. 1”. The photos from this set were all chosen from the personal Flickr Faves of Mr. Strobist himself, David Hobby.

Not familiar with Strobist? It’s an amazing photography blog all about lighting that focuses mostly on how to use smaller shoe-mount flashes OFF of your camera to help take your photographs to the next level. It is also geared towards the budget conscious, contains lots of DIY tips and helps to prove that you don’t always need fancy expensive equipment (although YES it is nice!) to make an amazing photo. For those that are just starting out with lighting, there are great lighting courses available on the site FOR FREE! I personally owe a big thanks to Mr Hobby for sharing his knowledge because I really learned A LOT from his site so do check it out! :)
